Jonathan, King Saul’s son had entered into a covenant with David where they would protect each other’s families. It was normal for new king to kill all the family of the old king. So, here was Mephibosheth, Jonathan’s son meeting King David for the first time, wondering if he was going to be killed, instead he was invited to eat at the kings table and live in the kings home! “When Mephibosheth son of Jonathan, the son of Saul, came to David, he bowed down to pay him honor. David said, “Mephibosheth!” “At your service,” he replied. “DON’T BE AFRAID,” David said to him, “for I WILL SURELY SHOW YOU KINDNESS for the sake of your father Jonathan. I WILL RESTORE TO YOU ALL THE LAND THAT BELONGED TO YOUR GRANDFATHER SAUL, and YOU WILLALWAYS EAT AT MY TABLE.” Mephibosheth bowed down and said, “What is your servant, thatYOU SHOULD NOTICE A DEAD DOG LIKE ME?”(2 Sam. 9:6-9)
We, who were dead in our sins, were redeemed by the blood of the Lamb now, “The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. Now if we are children, then we are heirs—HEIRS OF GOD AND CO-HEIRS WITH CHRIST, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.” (Rom. 8:16-17) We are now God’s children and Jesus Christ is our brother…“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy HE HAS GIVEN US NEW BIRTH INTO A LIVING HOPEthrough the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and INTO AN INHERITANCE THAT CANNEVER PERISH, SPOIL OR FADE. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you…” (1 Pet. 1:3-4)
